We often to refer to our lifetimes as journeys, we head off down the main thoroughfare making choices to go left, right, straight, around bends and sometimes we end up at the bottom of a cul de sac! For everyone the journey is different, sometimes we have a choice which way to go and at others time we’re forced to go one way.
Learning is no different, and a good Path of Instruction keeps us focused and on track for success both in the workplace and personally. We are all familiar with such paths, school and any type of formal education follows curricula and timetables. In the workplace however, it can be a bit more haphazard but if planned right organisations can really maximise the skills and abilities of their staff by providing relevant training plans.
Today with Competency Mapping and Personal Learning Planning services and software available it is easier then ever to create a road map for every individual that is reflective of their own existing skills and those required to move forward.
A good example of how this can work is an employee within a care home. Their Path of Instruction should lead to an NVQ and beyond if so desired. Strict compliancy laws demand that these employees are trained and their journey can easily be scoped out.
The route to a Health & Social Care NVQ
First stop – complete the mandatory compliancy training in Care Induction Standards
Then take – the mandatory training in health & safety and food safety if handling or exposed to food.
Along the way – undertake Knowledge Sets for Care covering Infection Prevention and Control, Dementia, Safe Guarding of Vulnerable Adults and Medications.
Stop off to – assess literacy and numeracy skills and based on an audit set out a training programme to raise skills where required
Pull over for – to take the Health and Social Care NVQ exam!
By providing the employee with a clear plan with objectives and goals, and most importantly support, the care home will be rewarded with a fully compliant, knowledgeable and in most cases enthused and motivated employee. It is seen time and again that employees who are on a Path of Instruction are less likely to leave a Path of Destruction, which in a care home for example could be devastating.
